Iola High School junior Austin Crooks is entering the new basketball season with a clear vision and a renewed sense of purpose. A versatile point guard and shooting guard, Crooks has spent the offseason sharpening his skills, expanding his leadership, and preparing to help the Mustangs take a big step forward.
One of Crooks’ primary goals for the season is for the team to finish above .500 and make a deep run in substate. For him, this season isn’t just about individual accolades; it’s about elevating everyone around him. Still, he has set strong personal expectations. Crooks aims to lead the team vocally and by example. He wants to be the most active defender on the floor and establish himself as a consistent scoring threat.
To prepare, Crooks put in significant work over the summer. He attended multiple basketball camps, competed in a summer league with his high school teammates, and spent countless hours in the gym putting up shots and refining his game. That work ethic is sure to elevate Crooks’ impact on the court.
With Iola lacking size this year, Crooks is embracing speed as the team’s biggest advantage. He believes that playing fast, pushing the tempo, and outrunning opponents will give the Mustangs a strong identity and a competitive edge throughout the season.
Beyond high school, Crooks hopes to play college basketball while continuing his academic career. His athleticism isn’t limited to the hardwood. Crooks also participates in football and baseball, showcasing his all-around athletic ability.
As the season approaches, Austin Crooks is poised to be a driving force for Iola, one who leads with energy, effort, and a relentless commitment to improvement.
