Kaytelynn Shively has built her high school career on consistency, competitiveness, and a drive to improve every time she steps onto the court or field. The Rawlins County High School senior has been a multi-sport contributor throughout her career, competing in volleyball, basketball, and track, but it’s on the basketball court where her impact has been especially evident.
A versatile player who can operate both in the post and on the wing, Shively capped her senior season with several major milestones. She recorded a career-high 33-point game, surpassed the 1,000-point mark, and eclipsed 800 career rebounds, numbers that reflect both her scoring ability and physical presence.
“What motivates me? I am very competitive and always strive to do the best I can.”
That competitive edge has fueled her through both big moments and challenging stretches. Rather than being discouraged by setbacks, Shively focuses on growth and effort as her foundation.
“Trying to improve myself is what motivates me. I always try to do something better the next time I compete. When things get tough, I just remember that it is alright to have an off day, but I still want to be able to say I tried as hard as I can.”
Her journey has been shaped by strong support systems, particularly within her family. Her grandfather and mother have played key roles in her development, offering both guidance and encouragement throughout the years.
“I have two people that have influenced me through my life. One is my grandpa who has helped me and been at as many games as possible. He gives me pointers and helps me fix anything that I might be struggling at. My other one is my mom. She has always helped me push through all of the hard parts and has supported me through everything. She has shown me how to keep competing as hard as I can.”
Representing her school has always carried special meaning for Shively, who understands the connection between athletics and community pride.
“It means a lot. Basketball is something that a lot of people in this town love to watch and I am proud to be someone that represents our town. It means a lot to me because it shows me that my hard work pays off and that it is more than just stats and wins or losses, but it is for the community, school and the kids who look up to us high schoolers.”
