For Jake Murphy, the atmosphere of high school basketball is as much about the people as it is about the game. “The best thing about being a student athlete at Frontenac is the support from the community,” he said. That support fuels his motivation every time he takes the floor.
Murphy plays an important role for the Raiders. “I’m a junior and play power forward and center,” he said. His love for the sport has been part of his life for as long as he can remember. “I’ve been playing basketball since I was a little kid, probably around six or seven.”
Preparation matters for every athlete, and Murphy has his own go-to routine. “Favorite pregame meal is a Bahama Mama smoothie from Tropical Smoothie and favorite postgame is Taco Bell,” he said.
He also finds motivation from teammates who set the bar high. “I’m always impressed by Jake Wegner. He’s a very hard worker and a great leader for other guys to look up to.” Rivalries also push him forward. “I always look forward to playing against Colgan. This year, I’m really looking forward to Girard because of the relationship I have with their head coach.”
Road games come with their own challenges, and Murphy knows which venue is the toughest. “Toughest road gym to play in is definitely Girard. It’s always packed, and they have a great atmosphere,” he said.
On the court, Murphy is focused on continued growth. “I’m looking to improve my offensive consistency and stepping into a leadership role and helping the younger guys,” he said.
Looking down the road, basketball and academics remain important goals. “I would like to attend college to play sports and major in construction management,” he said.
When it comes to his view of greatness, Murphy doesn’t hesitate. “The greatest basketball player of all time in my opinion is Carmelo Anthony.”
With a strong community behind him, teammates who inspire him, and personal goals that push him forward, Murphy is shaping his own path as a leader and competitor for the Raiders.
