When the clock starts and the pack takes off, Easton Colborn’s goal is simple and bold: “My personal goals going into the season are running under 16 minutes and placing at state.”
This season’s approach has been all about smarter recovery. “We have prepared differently by having a little more rest after track season to give our bodies recovery time before the cross-country season begins,” he said. That reset has made a difference, especially in team mentality. “The biggest improvement is that everyone is coming into the season ready to work hard and push each other to get better.”
The Chanute cross country team isn’t shy about its ambitions. “A goal our team has this year is to place top three at state,” Colborn said. “We are going to achieve this by showing up every day and working hard.”
With everyone returning, the Blue Comets are in prime position to chase that goal. “Our team’s biggest strength right now is that we are returning everyone from last season.”
Easton takes on leadership responsibilities in more ways than one. “A role I play on the team is a leader alongside the other two seniors,” he said. “My teammates also consider me as the stats guy because I am always looking to see what time it will take to win the meet.”
Each race starts with a simple ritual. “When preparing for a run I read a quote by Steve Prefontaine.”
His physical prep is just as disciplined: “I prepare myself physically for meets with multiple events by eating right, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and taking care of any aches & pains.”
“My mindset when I step onto the field to run is keep up with the top runner and do my best.”
And when it’s all said and done? “I would like our legacy to be the greatest cross-country team in Chanute history and would also like to be one of the greatest cross-country runners in Chanute history.”
Easton is also involved in baseball and track.
