The Independence Bulldogs enter the 2026 football season with a clear objective: Build on last year’s competitive performances and take the next step in the Southeast Kansas League.
Independence finished 3-6 in 2025, but the Bulldogs were competitive throughout the season. Several games against league rivals came down to the final drives, providing valuable experience for a roster that returns more than 13 starters and contributors.
Coach Kendall Fiscus, entering his fourth season at Independence and his 14th year in coaching, said the Bulldogs are determined to turn those close games into victories.
“This year, Independence Football is looking to build off of the momentum that we built from last season,” Fiscus said. “2025 saw the Bulldogs competitive in every game, but falling short on final drives against key league rivals.”
That experience has become part of the team’s motivation heading into the new season.
“This year, we want to use that experience, alongside returning over 13 starters and contributors, to make our push for the top of the SEK,” Fiscus said.
Independence will have plenty of familiar faces on both sides of the ball. Among the returning contributors are quarterback/defensive back Javen Colbert, halfback/linebacker Reece Reichenberger, offensive and defensive linemen Brayden Littlepage, Noah Edington, Logan Peschka and Kendrick Penn, and Ian Martinez at offensive tackle and defensive end.
The Bulldogs also return Jeremiah Melugin, Amare Brown, Kaeson Lewis, Kumari Jay, Joel King and Maddox Purvis. Lewis and Jay provide versatility at running back and on defense, while Brown and King contribute at wide receiver and defensive back. Purvis also handles punting duties.
Independence will operate from a Gun T offense and a 4-3 defensive alignment.
The Bulldogs will have to replace several key players from last year’s team, including Kellen Lanning, Stanley Kowalczyk, Deion Jones, Bryson Fulk and Jace Dye.
The returning players will be expected to use their experience to help establish a stronger team identity.
“The key to achieving that goal is to not be satisfied with close losses, but to work in the off-season and come together as a team,” Fiscus said.
