The Field Kindley Golden Tornadoes football squad is a team on the rise, winning seven games last season and placing second in the SEK League. It is a team that returns a deep field of senior talent, including wide receiver Damaris Smith.
Smitha and his teammates are looking to win a few more games this year and hopefully make a deep playoff run. Smith is excited about the opportunity to show that the Tornadoes have made strides, but in the end, he is just happy to have one more opportunity at the high school level to compete with his friends, “l look forward to spending one last year with my teammates, winning games, and having fun.”
When asked about his specific role on the team, Damaris responded, “I’m a team player. I block for my teammates, and sometimes I run the ball. As a senior, I want to be a positive role model for the younger players who might face some of the same challenges I have had to face. I plan to encourage them to keep working to get where they want to be.”
In the off-season, Damaris worked particularly on his speed and strength by increasing both the frequency and the intensity of his workout schedule.
As well as lettering in each of his first three seasons on the gridiron, Damaris has also lettered in baseball and in wrestling, and he participated in basketball for the Golden Tornado, as well.
Damaris plans to graduate from the tech program at Coffeyville Community College with his welding certificate. He is also planning to play baseball collegiately.
