Tucker Wimp knows there won’t be many easy Friday nights this fall.
With a league loaded with talented teams and closely matched competition, the Oswego standout is embracing the challenge rather than shying away from it. Wimp believes the Indians have the talent to contend if they continue building on the work they’ve put in throughout the offseason.
“The thing I am most excited for this year has to be the competition,” Wimp said. “Our league is very similar in skill and all our games are going to be close. The teams we play have a lot of great players, but so do we. As long as our team plays hard and keeps mastering our skills, we will go far.”
That confidence has been built through months of preparation.
Like many of his teammates, Wimp participated in Oswego’s summer weightlifting program, where players spent mornings in the weight room before heading to the practice field to work on plays and blocking techniques. The program ran throughout the summer, culminating just before official practices begin.
The Indians also held a team football camp that brought together both high school and junior high players to sharpen their skills. Wimp didn’t stop there, spending additional time at a local gym with teammates to continue building strength.
“I have attended all summer workouts and pushed for PR’s all summer, along with extra training outside of weights,” Wimp said.
The senior focused on two specific areas this offseason: strength and coordination.
As a lineman, Wimp understands that power alone isn’t enough. Improving his footwork and overall athleticism has become just as important as adding weight to the bar.
“I believe that being strong is a huge part of being a great player,” Wimp said. “The second thing I’ve been training is my coordination. Footwork is a huge part of my job as a lineman, so I believe it is essential to have good footwork.”
Wimp enters the season coming off an impressive junior campaign on defense. He totaled 27 solo tackles and 17 assisted tackles while recording three sacks, forcing three fumbles and recovering three more. His performance earned him all-league honors as an offensive lineman and unanimous all-league recognition on the defensive line.
Despite the accolades, Wimp is motivated by bigger goals.
Individually, he hopes to establish himself as one of the area’s top linemen and earn a spot in the Kansas Eight-Man All-Star Game.
“A huge goal I have for this year is to really make a name for myself,” Wimp said. “I would like to be recognized and prove how much work I have put in throughout high school. I would also love to go to the 8-man all-star game this year.”
His team goals, however, remain at the forefront.
“I would like our entire team to put it all on the line and have as much fun as possible this year,” Wimp said.
