Independence’s Katelyn Spencer – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Great Plains Federal Credit Union

By Angela Brunk

Independence High School senior Katelyn Spencer enters her final basketball season with the same determination and leadership that have defined her career. A returning post player and former team captain, sharing last year’s leadership role with teammate Brooklyn Mattix, Spencer is focused on elevating both her individual performance and her team’s overall chemistry.

One of her biggest personal goals this season is improving her free-throw percentage. After boosting it to 61% last year, a major jump from her sophomore season, Spencer now has her sights set on reaching the 75–80% mark. As a team, Spencer hopes to work as a cohesive unit on offense to help the season go more smoothly.

Among her proudest accomplishments is a perfect 100% from the three-point line, thanks to a single, last-game-of-the-season shot she’ll never forget. She also pulled down an impressive 155 rebounds, showcasing her strength in the post.

Looking ahead, Spencer is excited about finally having a healthy roster. “Last year we faced a lot of difficulties due to injuries,” she said. “I’m really excited to see how it’ll go.” She especially anticipates the annual Burlington tournament, which offers the chance to play unfamiliar opponents and break up the regular-season rhythm.

Spencer’s influence extends far beyond the basketball court. She also competes in volleyball and swim, and she is deeply involved in leadership and extracurricular activities as NHS Vice President, Senior Class President, a Link Crew member, a yearbook staffer, and the assistant section leader for the clarinets in the band.

After graduation, she plans to attend the University of Kansas to study Mechanical Engineering, carrying her drive, discipline, and passion into the next chapter of her journey.
