Independence’s Spencer Crain – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Great Plains Federal Credit Union

By Angela Brunk

Senior Spencer Crain is preparing for his final baseball season at Independence High School, ready to make the most of every inning in a Bulldogs uniform. A versatile player, Crain fills multiple roles for the team, including shortstop, catcher, pitcher, and second base. His ability to contribute wherever he’s needed makes him a valuable asset on both the infield and the mound.

What excites Crain most about the upcoming season isn’t just the competition; it’s the opportunity to play the game he loves alongside a close group of teammates. For him, baseball is about more than wins and losses; it’s about competing with friends and representing his school with pride. “I am most excited about this upcoming season that I can play the game I love with a great group of buddies,” Crain shared.

During the offseason, Crain has put in significant work to elevate his game. Much of his focus has been in the gym, working to become faster and stronger. At the same time, he has continued sharpening his skills on the field. One area he has targeted for improvement is his hitting. Since entering high school, he has found consistency at the plate to be a challenge, but he has attacked that weakness head-on. With guidance from college coaches and experienced mentors who understand the game at a high level, Crain has worked diligently to refine his swing and approach.

He has set ambitious goals for his senior season, aiming for a .400 batting average and a .975 fielding percentage. Just as important is his team’s goal of finishing the season with a winning record.

After graduation, Crain plans to attend Coffeyville Community College, where he will pursue an associate degree in athletic training while continuing his baseball career. In addition to baseball, Crain also competes in basketball and powerlifting, showcasing his dedication to athletics year-round.

To finish off his senior year, Crain is ready to step on the field one last time this season as a Bulldog.
