VYPE: What do you love most about being a student-athlete at Pittsburg HS?
Breck Slaughter: I love that being a student-athlete has helped me make new connections with other people. I love the atmosphere when it comes to our team and it’s always a safe place where everyone can be theirselves. I also love that our coaches put the responsibility on us to make sure school comes first before getting on the field.
VYPE: What grade are you in and what is your favorite subject?
BS: I am a senior and my favorite subject is psychology.
VYPE: How long have you been playing softball and what position do you play?
BS: I have been playing softball since 8u, and I am a pitcher and middle infielder.
VYPE: If you could play any other position on the field, which would it be?
BS: If I could play any other position on the field, it would be catcher.
VYPE: What is your favorite pre-game and post-game meal?
BS: My favorite pre-game meal is tropical smoothie (beach bum with white chocolate)
My favorite post-game meal is Taco Bell
VYPE: Where is your favorite place to play and why?
BS: My favorite place to play is pitcher because that’s my main position and I feel very confident in my skills that I have. I know that the whole field has my back, and I have big trust in them to make the plays happen.
VYPE: What opponent do you look forward to playing this season?
BS: I look forward to playing Fort Scott. They have always been good competition for us throughout the years and it’s always an exciting game against them.
VYPE: Who on the team keeps everyone laughing, who is the most serious and who has the best impression of your coach?
BS: Brette Pasteur always keeps everyone laughing and Leah Niederklein is the most serious and is always working to get better! Someone who has the best impression of Coach Gomez is probably Brette as well, we are always having fun with him and joking around quite a bit.
VYPE: Who has been a big influence in your life? Explain.
BS: Kiana Saint Pierre has been a big influence in my life. Not only because of softball, but also, she has been a big part of my life for knowing her for a short amount of time. She was my pitching coach my first year playing high school softball and made a big impact on the way I view myself not only in the circle, but in every way of life. I see myself as a mini-her and we have very similar personalities. She made the game of softball more fun and something to look forward to, as I used to not know if I ever wanted to play again because the mental side of softball took a toll on me. She has helped me in many ways and has influenced me to want to be the best.
VYPE: What would you like to do after you graduate?
BS: I want to go to college and major in nursing to become a cosmetic nurse. While also playing college softball.
