Independence’s Kellen Lanning – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Advanced Physical Therapy

Senior Kellen Lanning has become a standout name in Independence, Kansas, known for his drive, leadership, and athletic versatility. As a three-sport athlete competing in basketball in the winter season, baseball during the spring season, and football during the fall season, Lanning has embraced every challenge thrown his way, earning the respect of coaches, teammates, and the community.

Whether he’s locking down centerfield on the baseball diamond, hauling in passes as a wide receiver on the football field, or hitting clutch shots as a shooting guard on the basketball court, Lanning’s impact is felt across all seasons. He credits much of his motivation to his teammates and coaches. Lanning shared with Vype Magazine how his coaches and teammates push him to get better, and he wants to help his teammates get better, too.

Lanning’s journey through high school sports has been fueled by a strong support system, including his parents, grandpa, coaches, and friends. One coach in particular, Coach Camacho, has made a lasting impact on Lanning by pushing him into the weight room and teaching him the value of relentless effort. Coach Camacho has taught Lanning and the team to never be satisfied with being good and to always work to be great.

The mindset of Lanning’s coach has paid off for Lanning. He points to a key moment during his football career when he made a big catch right before halftime in a game against Wamego. That play helped shift the momentum of the game and gave the team the confidence they needed going into the second half. A memory he won’t soon forget.

Looking ahead, Kellen hopes to continue playing basketball at the college level while pursuing a career as a financial advisor. However, he is currently undecided on which college to attend. Wherever the future takes him, he remains proud to represent his school and hometown. “It means a lot. I love representing Independence and showing the talent and passion we have in our school,” he told Vype Magazine.

With his work ethic, character, and love for the game, Kellen Lanning is leaving a lasting legacy at Independence High School.
