Chanute’s Jaron Powers – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Rowdy Kyser Shelter Insurance

Jaron Powers, a senior at Chanute High School, has become one of the most accomplished distance runners in the school’s history. Competing in cross country in the fall as well as track during the spring season. Powers specializes in the distance events. During cross country, Powers runs a 5K, and during track, he competes in the 3200, 1600, and 4×800 relay events. His journey to success wasn’t immediate. He was far from a standout runner in middle school, but through years of hard work, dedication, and countless long runs, Powers transformed himself into a top-tier athlete.

Representing Chanute has become a point of pride for Powers, especially as someone who once saw himself as an underdog. “It feels like an honor and an accomplishment,” he shared with Vype Magazine. “I wasn’t good at running in middle school, so being one of the best runners Chanute has had shows how much work it took to get here.” That work has paid off for Powers. He now holds school records, a testament to his persistence and growth.

Powers credits much of his motivation to not wanting to let his teammates and coaches down. One of his biggest inspirations is his cross country coach, an ultramarathoner whose dedication to running helped shape Powers’ own mindset. Another major influence has been his engineering teacher, who also coaches track. “He’s always believed in our runners, even when we didn’t believe in ourselves,” Power reflected.

Despite Chanute being a smaller school without many outside running clubs, Powers’ accomplishments speak volumes about what can be achieved with internal drive and the support of a close-knit community. Looking ahead, he plans to attend Pittsburg State University and is considering running at the collegiate level, though final decisions are still being made.

Jaron Powers’ story is one of resilience, passion, and personal growth. It’s a reminder that greatness isn’t always about where you start, but how far you’re willing to go.
