Sometimes the best teams are built on more than just talent—they’re built on friendship. For Chanute senior Tyler Rowden, that’s exactly what makes this cross-country squad special. “Our team’s biggest strength I think has to be how we have six guys that are all able to run really fast times and be on the same team with all of us being good friends,” he said.
Rowden, now in his senior season, knows the value of preparation—and how much of it starts with rest. “The preparation that has been different from last year has been prioritizing rest after the track season with some easy runs scattered into our two-week break. I think that has helped us greatly in our bodies recovering from the track season to get us fresh for the season,” he explained.
With big meets like Wamego and Rim Rock on the calendar, Rowden is focused on pushing through to the next level. “My personal goals heading into this season would be to place at state and at big meets with a lot of competition like Rim Rock and Wamego,” he said. “I’d also like to break 17 minutes, get into the 16 minutes for a 5K, and place top three as a team at state.”
Mindset, he says, is where everything starts. “The biggest improvements our team has had so far, has been, in my opinion, our mindset going into runs and workouts,” Rowden said. “Going from dreading the run to being excited to get better and compete with the great competition in Kansas.”
Tyler also brings a steadying presence to the team. “The role I play on the team is probably a leader role along with the other two seniors on the team, Easton and Jaron.”
Before a race, he keeps things simple and spiritual. “I look for my watch, running shoes, and I read some of the Bible on my phone, which always helps me to get ready for the run.”
And when it comes to legacy? “The legacy I want at Chanute is to be one of hard work and greatness.”
