Erie High School senior basketball post player and student-athlete Jacksen Powell spoke to VYPE SPORTS in a recent interview.
VYPE SPORTS: What are your personal goals for the year?
Powell: This year I want to improve my game, be a better teammate, and be the best leader possible.
VYPE SPORTS: What is your favorite athletic memory?
Powell: Just being a part of the athletics at Erie High School is so enjoyable, the atmosphere is amazing. We always have fun, and the community always supports us and helps us out when we need it.
VYPE SPORTS: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
Powell: Kinzie Cleaver left the biggest impression on me because she always hustled on the court and never gave up. She was an amazing leader and always had something positive to say. She always showed up for her team and did anything and everything to help the team.
VYPE SPORTS: What is your favorite part of being on this team?
Powell: I love being a part of this team because we all get along so well. We all have a similar sense of humor, so there is never a dull moment when we are practicing or playing.
VYPE SPORTS: What clubs or campus groups are you involved with and why?
Powell: I am a member of FFA, FCA, STUCO, NHS, KAY, Art Club, and 4-H. I joined these organizations because I enjoy being involved with my school. These organizations can take you places after high school, and they teach you many skills that will benefit you in the future.
VYPE SPORTS: What accolades (in any sport or activity) are you most proud of?
Powell: After my sophomore season, I was selected by my teammates as the MVP of the basketball team.
VYPE SPORTS: What has your sport taught you that you use in your daily life?
Powell: It has taught me patience. Patience has always been an issue for me, but when you play basketball with younger kids or kids that don’t quite understand the game, you have to be patient with them.
VYPE SPORTS: What is the best advice that anyone has given you?
Powell: You can’t score if you don’t shoot the ball.
VYPE SPORTS: Who inspires you the most, and why?
Powell: My dad inspires me because of all the hard work he does for me and my family. His work ethic has definitely left a large impression on me. Whenever he starts something, he will get it done – even if it’s dark or raining.
VYPE SPORTS: Here is your chance to give a shoutout or say thank you to anyone you wish.
Powell: I want to thank my family and all the people who have coached me over the years. I just want to give them my heartfelt thanks for always believing in me and pushing me to get better.
