Independence’s Cami Lewis – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Advanced Physical Therapy

Independence’s Cami Lewis was the winner of our “Most Outstanding Girls Wrestler Poll”. This means that her community voted that they believe she will be the best female wrestler in the area this season and that VYPE should feature her in our online editorial. When we reached out to Lewis for an interview she shared with us details about her life.

She began by sharing “My favorite part of being on the team is the support the girls provide for each other. We work together to win and the team makes sure no one is or feels left behind”. According to Lewis “Wrestling has taught me endurance; to power through when I find something to be difficult, because if I can overcome an obstacle placed in front of me once- I can do it again”.

This year, she has been working “to focus in and improve on my basic skills, keep my grades up, make it to and place at the State level, keep a good attitude, and have fun”. Not only is Lewis. member of the wrestling team, but she also participates in “choir, orchestra, marching band, pep band, concert band, jazz band, drama club, health club, wrestling, and swim” while at school. Away from school, she can be seen executing her duties as 4-H club Secretary and singing in the community choir.

In all of her endeavors, the person who inspires her most is her best friend Sarah who convinced her to start wrestling. Lewis said, “Sarah has been my constant support, motivator, and -sometimes- competition. Her kindness and ambition are what inspire me the most”. She also acknowledged a few other important people in her life.

“I’d like to give a shout-out to my coaches, Camacho and Lance; thanks for taking a chance on me and teaching me what you know. To my family, thank you for supporting me, pushing me, and listening to me. And to Sarah and Memory, I couldn’t have asked for better friends, you guys mean the world to me” said Lewis.
