Coffeyville girls wrestler Kenedi Redden spoke to VYPE in an interview.
VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?
My personal goals for this year are to come back from my injury in January and finish out the season by placing at regionals and going to state.
VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?
My favorite athletic memory was when we hosted girls regionals last year and before weigh-ins the girls from other teams came down to the mats and danced with us while we played music.
VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
The teammate that has left the biggest impact on me was Melissa Ortiz who was a junior when I was a freshman. It was my first year ever wrestling and she really helped me and made me a better wrestler and person. She still comes and wrestles with me sometimes even though she graduated.
VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?
My favorite part of being on this team is that it feels like a family. We all support and take care of each other during the fun parts of wrestling and the hard parts as well. I’ve gained so many strong friendships with the girls on my team.
VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?
I participate in many service projects through my clubs and various groups. Community service is important to me and I try to include it in my life.
VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?
I am involved in volleyball, wrestling, and softball through the school along with FFA, NHS, Prom Committee, and Junior Advisory Council. Being in clubs and other organizations and teams helps me meet more people and makes more opportunities for me to learn and grow.
VYPE: What has your sport taught you that you use in your daily life?
Wrestling has taught me about so much more than just the sport. It has taught me to never take anything for granted, and that it’s possible to do really difficult things. It has just overall improved my mindset and made me a better person.
VYPE: What is the best advice that anyone has given you?
The best advice someone has ever given me came from my older brother. He told me to not think so much and just do what I know how to do. This helped me a lot with wrestling and with life because I get caught up in worrying about what will happen instead of taking chances and going for what I want.
VYPE: Who inspires you and why?
I am inspired by all of my teammates and coaches who have put so much into bettering not only themselves but everyone else around them.
VYPE: Here is your chance to give a shoutout or say thank you to anyone you wish.
I want to give a shoutout to my mom and dad for supporting me no matter what and to my brother because without him I never would have gotten on the mat.
