Baxter Springs basketball player Weston Shafer recently interviewed with VYPE.
VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?
My personal goal for this year is to maintain a 4.0 GPA in all of my high school and college classes while remaining at the top of my class. As for basketball, I would like to get some awesome dunks and obtain a record above 500. Through all of this, I want to create great memories and have fun doing it!
VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?
The most fun I’ve had in the past year is adding a new sport to my repertoire, golf. I had forgotten how fun it is to learn a new sport and conquer its challenges.
VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?
My favorite teacher of all time is Mrs. Sara Davis. I have taken every high school and college math class that she offers. It is because of her that I plan on becoming a math teacher. Although it is challenging, she makes math, enjoyable, unlike any other teacher I have ever had.
VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?
My favorite, athletic memory is getting my very first in-game dunk. It had been at the top of my goals ever since I was a little boy watching my big brother play basketball.
VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
I would have to say Logan Gess is the teammate who has left the biggest impression on me. Logan always encouraged me to do my best and be selfless with the ball.
VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?
My favorite part of being on this team is playing basketball with the group of boys. I started out with. We have literally played together since second grade on travel teams, and in school.
VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?
If I could go to any place for a summer vacation, I would go on a cruise to Cancun. I would take my girlfriend, family, and of course, my best friends.
VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?
If you gave me $500 and I had to spend it in the next 24 hours, I would either buy a couple of new pairs of basketball shoes or buy a new driver for my golf set.
VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?
I have been a member of the Spanish club for four years and I’m also a member of the science club although I have maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school, while taking concurrent credit classes, I have never joined the National Honor Society.
