Humboldt Cubs
Coach: Logan Wyrick
2022 Record: 8-3
Offense:
Coach Logan Wyrick of the Humboldt Cubs shared “Each and every year, our team goals stay the same; win a Tri-Valley League title, win our District title, and get to practice through Thanksgiving with a win at the State Championship in Salina. Obviously, to meet those goals we must have great week-to-week preparation and goals to meet each week.” Also saying “Offensively, we return 6 starters and 10 athletes that actually started multiple games. We do have to find a way to replace Trey Sommer, an Emporia State signee. Sommer led our offensive attack with over 1,800 yards rushing, as well as over 500 yards passing when he was forced into playing Quarterback—another major who is up front, with 3 starters moving on. Maddox Johnson was a 2-year captain and 4-year starter up front, and 3-year starters River Kaufman and William Kobold. The “Trench Gang” will return and be led by 3-year captain and 4-year starter, Garren Goodner at Center. Goodner has been the lynchpin to our offense over the last 3 seasons, and we will look to him to be an even bigger leader in 2023.
Defense:
Wyrick went on to tell VYPE that “Defensively, we have 12 players back that started multiple games a season ago. We have a lot of experience in multiple positions, but we will need to find how all those pieces fit together very quickly. We will have the toughest time replacing the same athletes on defense, as we did on offense. Some keys to defense will be the returning experience at linebacker with Cole Mathes, Kyler Isbell, and Chase DeMeritt. Also upfront, we will lean heavily on Garren Goodner, Sam Hull, and Logan Page. The defensive line will be undersized, but very athletic; with Sam Hull who has also started multiple years at cornerback, and Logan Page who has started many games at linebacker.
